Clandestine
Saturday, December 9, 2000 7:30 PM at Strings and Things 1555 Madison, Memphis.

Clandestine grew out of a pipe and drum ensemble founded in 1991 in Houston, Texas. They've been touring full time since 1998 and playing to sell-out crowds at folk venues and festivals nationwide. The group combines Highland pipes, fiddle, acoustic guitar, hand percussion, and vocal harmonies to produce high energy, traditional Celtic music tinged by modern influences. Group members include E. J. Jones on Highland bagpipes, Gregory McQueen on fiddle, Jennifer Hamel on guitar and vocals, and Emily Dugas on percussion and vocals. When Hamel and Dugas combine on vocal harmonies, especially a cappella, you'll agree with Dirty Linen's assessment of their music: "powerful stuff, beautiful stuff." Clandestine's discography includes five CDs, the latest of which is To Anybody at All, produced in 1999.

This "frighteningly tight four piece band out of Texas" has certainly found its Memphis fan base. Last year's concert sold out, and ticket requests began pouring in this year before the tickets were even printed! It seems that Clandestine's energy is contagious.

MAMA wishes to thank Jennifer Dobbs for underwriting this show to honor the memory of her son, Sherief Shaalan, who died on Dec 29, 1999.
